Bookkeeping Business
Many
people consider starting a bookkeeping
business. This is a popular business opportunity because it is one that just about every business must
use. It is also one of the first things that businesses are eager to farm out to others. Therefore, it can
provide a great business opportunity for those who enjoy doing bookkeeping. Here, we provide a list of tips that
you can use to help get your own bookkeeping business
started.
- Get your first
client.
The first goal should be to get a client and do good work for them. This is important because it will give
you some experience and if you do good work for them, allow you to get a good testimonial from them. This
can in turn allow you to get additional work. Probably the easiest way to get this client will be through
word of mouth. You can also put out a basic ad in services like Craig’s List. If you are having trouble
finding this first client, you should also consider being willing to do the service at a discounted rate or
for free.
- Build a web
presence.
The Internet has the advantage of being a 24 hour /7 day a week sales machine. As you get your business off
the ground, you should prepare a basic website that allows people the ability to get in contact with you
about your business. This site can allow you to discuss the services you offer and your rates. The website
also provides something you can add to your business cards and offline advertising to give you further
credibility. It is also fairly inexpensive to get a website up and running as you can get a nice site setup
for under $200.
- Add additional credibility
indicators. Credibility indicators are
anything that adds credibility to your business. These can include things like: giving your company a
business name (DBA,LLC, etc) rather than simply using your own name, adding a list of customer
testimonials, getting certified and displaying that you are a certified professional bookkeeper, joining
the two bookkeeping associations, etc. All these steps provide you with material in which you can display
further credibility to clients. You could also help out and answer questions on certain websites that will
give you a web presence as an expert in this area.
- Get the word
out. To
get additional clients, be sure to let people know that you are looking for clients. Ask friends, family,
co-workers, etc. The goal here is to simply cast a net and let others do the work for you. One simple step
you can take is help out at the local chamber of commerce and tell people you are looking for additional
clients and hand out business cards. The people at the chamber of commerce will run their own businesses
and/or know those who run their own businesses and thus be possible clients for your bookkeeping
business.
The
above list is by no means exhaustive. There are countless other ways you can spur further business. The key is
to simply use a number of different methods to find out which methods work best. This should help ensure that
you find the best methods in your area to help build up your bookkeeping
business.
